Join one of Britain’s foremost historians of espionage to uncover the hidden history of Vienna – once the heart of European espionage

After the First World War, Vienna became the centre of espionage and the city where the spies of East and West operated. British intelligence used the city to monitor the threat from the rise of Nazi Germany, communism and the Soviet Union.

On this four-day tour, you'll see Vienna through the eyes of the ultimate British spymaster of the 20th century - Thomas Kendrick - a man who worked in the shadows of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) for nearly 40 years. Discover the places where he operated his vast web of secret agents across Europe.

You'll be accompanied on your tour by espionage expert Helen Fry, who'll provide intriguing insights into the world of espionage throughout the Second World War and the early Cold War, by delivering two talks and joining you on excursions.

The tour will explore the dramatic historical events of March 1938 when Hitler annexed Austria and his forces occupied the streets of this beautiful city. You'll visit the Hofburg, Vienna's palace complex, where Hitler gave his infamous speech to the Austrian people.

You'll learn about how, at great personal risk, Kendrick saved thousands of Jews and became the 'Oskar Schindler of Vienna' and will have the opportunity to visit the places where his rescue efforts took place.

Throughout the trip you'll be based at the lovely Mercure Grand Hotel Biedermeier Wien, a four-star hotel conveniently located close to the centre of the city. In between excursions you may choose to make the most of the hotel facilities, like the spa, gym, and sauna, or have a drink in the rustic Weissgerberstube pub.
